Hello dear Lightspark.
Maybe it is your inner power animal.
But only you know what is true or not.
In visions and in meditations you can often meet your totems and your inner power animals.
before meditation just ask for your totem to introduce them.
There are some exercises for this and when I can make a discussion about this exercise I will do this as soon as possible.
But listen to your heart to know if it is true or not.
It could be, but it could be you have more then one, like myself have more kinds.
But it often depends on what you need from the totems as all totems represent some life wisdom and help.
One is your head totem, one is your head inner power animal like also with spiritual guide's and angels, only know that spirits, like angels, totems etc don't really have a form, they can change into each form they like.
But thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience and story.

Sometimes I wear silver eagle amulet. I am about to by a golden version and golden neck chain too...
I will explain the symbolism:
I have been born under sign of Scorpio. Ancient ashtrologist considered an enlightened Scorpio to be an Eagle. I will scan a picture here when I remember the subject. Actually, I have not checked out if my true totem is an Eagle.

It is a real shame that there are not many who have totems and otherwise still know the strengths of the old pre-historic ones. It would be a great idear to eventually go on totem quests to find them again. As there is much they know and can help with.

My totems are:

Cave Lion
Sabeltooth Tiger
Black Panther
and sometimes eagle, wolve or some other totem, but mostly it is Cave Lion
